Poetry writing mentorship for secondary schools in Jinja. –

The event which took place on Saturday 28th September 2024 at PMM Girls’ School in Jinja, featured open discussions, group work, poetry recitations, a model panel discussion on selected poems, and a gallery-style display of student work, among other activities.

I was particularly intrigued to see many young poets experimenting with rhyme as their preferred poetic device. This trend was likely inspired by Let’s Start!, a model poem chosen for the occasion. Cleverly crafted and playful, the piece by Palvy Budhan, a key contributor to the anthology A Child is a Seedling, clearly left a lasting impression on the students.

I am grateful to the leadership of Kiira College, Jinja College, and PMM Girls’ School for facilitating the participation of these learners.

We look forward to and advancement in the next event in March 2025, which will be hosted by another school.
