In Uganda, the recently revised secondary school curriculum highlights ICT integration as a key pillar for equipping students with 21st-century skills. This shift is not just about using technology—it’s about empowering educators to redefine the learning experience.
I recently had the privilege of reconnecting with Mr. Emokol Emmy, a teacher at PMM Girls’ School and a true trailblazer in ICT-driven education.
A Passionate Educator with a Vision
Mr. Emokol, a graduate of Mbarara University of Science and Technology with a degree in Biology and Chemistry, has always stood out. Even before I left PMM Girls’ School in 2018, I had noticed his proactive approach to using the school’s ICT resources—not just in teaching, but also in student data management.
Fast forward to today, and he is fully embracing the integration of technology in his lessons, proving that ICT can truly enhance learning when used effectively.
Maximizing ICT Resources in the Classroom
PMM Girls’ School was among the institutions equipped with an ICT laboratory by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in 2014. While many schools struggle to make full use of these facilities, Mr. Emokol is an exception.
During my recent visit, I stumbled upon him conducting a Senior Five Biology class—but this was no ordinary lesson. He had found a way to bridge the gap between traditional and digital learning by integrating Google Drive and WhatsApp into his teaching methods.
Day scholars could access learning materials remotely via WhatsApp
Boarders utilized the school’s ICT lab to work on Google Drive
Students found these tools more engaging and effective for research, collaboration, and time management
What Do the Students Think?
Curious about the impact of his approach, we distributed a simple Google Forms survey to his students. Their feedback was eye-opening:
They felt more engaged and motivated in class
They appreciated the convenience and efficiency of digital tools
They preferred collaborative and interactive learning over traditional teacher-centered methods
Of course, there were challenges, such as slow internet speeds and some students struggling to adapt, but overall, the enthusiasm for technology-driven learning was undeniable.
A Teacher Who Leads by Example
Watching Mr. Emokol in action was both inspiring and affirming. He is not just teaching Biology and Chemistry—he is equipping students with skills that will serve them in the digital age.
In a country where ICT adoption in education is still a work in progress, his dedication is proof that change starts with one committed teacher.
Imagine if more educators took the same initiative?
Final Thoughts
Teachers like Mr. Emokol remind us that technology is not here to replace educators—it is here to empower them. His story is a call to action for all stakeholders in education to support and encourage ICT integration in schools.
