In 2018, Logiel Elizabeth was selected as one of the poets from PMM Girls’ School to represent the school at a national poetry competition organized by a leading service provider in Uganda.
Her poems were so good that the judges decided that it wasn’t original. Reason? A student from PMM Girls’ School could not have been that creative! They demanded for other poems by Logiel to be produced to prove them wrong.
Such is the extremity of standardization in our education that a flaming talent of youth is easily snuffed off by misguided labeling.
Just like that!
Thankfully, this ever-cheerful young soul has remained unruffled. Her original source of inspiration is Abyan, another contributor to the anthology. She greatly inspired Logiel:
“I saw how beautiful her poems were written and decorated by Mr. Chole.” It was quite a common practice to pin up students’ illustrated poems on notice boards. Logiel was one of those who never let them pass unnoticed. “It inspired and interested me, and I was like, ‘Yes, I can also write like her’”, she stated. And write, she did.
“I mostly write poems to inspire or motivate and uplift anyone who may read it … and when I see that something is not right and has to be changed,” stated Logiel.
Before long, she had loads of poems to her credit. Before long she was a favored candidate to represent the school in poetry competitions. Like many of her counterparts in this anthology project, she is a bud blossoming. With sustained commitment to poetry, great things are bound to happen for her, poetry-wise.
Logiel, who describes herself as “talkative and free person”, has other life interests and hobbies too: Reading, playing guitar, playing chess, travelling and nature walks.
